What Does ‘Tea’ Mean in England? A Complete Guide to Tea Culture

A Mother-Daughter Journey Through England’s Tea Traditions

Ah, there’s our favorite tea-stirring virtuoso, showing off the fine art of the perfect stir!

Back and forth—never circular—and the spoon? Quiet as a church mouse!

Just don’t get too lost in the technique—there’s nothing worse than a perfectly stirred, stone-cold cuppa!

Puzzled by English tea customs?

Let’s piece together this charming ritual!

“’Having tea” isn’t just about the drink – it’s more like an early dinner, when families gather between 5 and 7 p.m. for a proper meal.

“Afternoon tea” is that quintessential 4 p.m. break you’re picturing – warm scones, dainty sandwiches, and a perfect brew.

Spot high tea advertised, especially in London’s posh hotels? You’re looking at the tourist-friendly version – tiered pastries, premium teas, and perhaps a glass of bubbly. Remember, tea began as a social ritual, not an etiquette exam!

And then there’s the heart of British tea culture: the humble ‘cuppa.’ Any time, anywhere, Brits pop on the kettle for tea and a biscuit (cookie to Americans). It’s comfort over ceremony – exactly as tea should be!

We were steeped in the rich traditions and flavors of England’s tea culture.

It’s an excellent way to experience the heritage and customs of this essential English tradition. The tea store transports you back in time through the story of Thomas Twining, a merchant who began his tea journey working for the powerful East India Company. There, he gained invaluable merchandising knowledge, shrewdly saw a future in selling dried tea leaves, and eventually earned a reputation for having the finest tea in London.

The Best Tea Room Experience: Savoy’s Timeless Elegance

Photo Jia’s congratulations plate

The Savoy.

From the moment you arrive at The Savoy, it’s clear they want each guest to feel extraordinary. While London boasts many prestigious hotels serving traditional tea, the Savoy manages to elevate the experience to a gracious art form.

Step into the Thames Foyer, and you’re transported to an elegant drawing room of a grand estate.

Tables are thoughtfully spaced, offering both intimacy and discretion. At the heart of this enchanting space stands a beautiful gazebo, with a magnificent stained-glass cupola hovering above.

Our Sunday visit was enhanced by a delightful quartet of musical theater artists performing beloved classics.

With the historic Savoy Theatre right next door, it felt perfectly fitting for the setting.

The Savoy’s commitment to making celebrations special shone through – they were prepared for my daughter’s high school graduation celebration, having noted it from our reservation, and presented her with a special cake and heartfelt congratulations.

The tea selection is extensive, and every morsel – from the delicate finger sandwiches to the freshly baked scones and exquisite pastries – is crafted to perfection.

My favorite finger sandwich was a lemon cream cheese and chives. My daughter’s was the ham and English mustard.

A lovely touch: when our tiered trays were cleared, our waiter presented us with a box of additional treats to enjoy later.

The Savoy strives to make every visit special for each guest, and they certainly succeeded in creating a cherished memory for us.

Reservations are required, and each sitting allows a leisurely two hours to savor the experience.

A tea experience to budget for.

When you think of afternoon tea in London, Fortnum & Mason’s Diamond Jubilee Salon consistently tops every ‘best of’ list—and for good reason.

The food is exquisite, and the traditional afternoon tea experience exudes a charm all its own.

Having indulged here several times, I can attest to its excellence.

But if you’re looking for a delightful alternative that saves you at least £100 per person, there’s another spot where you can savor a memorable tea without skimping on flavor or fun.

Head to The Parlour.

This welcoming spot on the second floor offers many of the same treats and savory lunches.

While it’s best known for its elaborate ice cream creations and has a more relaxed atmosphere, you’ll still get to enjoy what makes Fortnum’s special—their exceptional baking and cuisine.

If you’re willing to forgo the traditional tier of finger sandwiches and stylized tea room ambience, you’ll still have a wonderful tea experience.

The tea is brewed to perfection, the cakes are just as sumptuous, and you’ll leave fully satisfied—with both the experience and the savings in your pocket.

Reservations can be made and highly suggested.

The blend of sacred reverence and historical grandeur creates an atmosphere unlike any other tea setting in London.

The tea itself is refreshingly simple yet utterly satisfying. A traditional tiered tray arrives with fresh finger sandwiches, delicate petit fours, and warm scones—all the classic elements of a proper afternoon tea.

It’s the perfect way to pause and reflect after exploring one of London’s most iconic landmarks.

At £37, it’s extremely affordable.
