Solo to Shared Tables: One Traveler’s Culinary Adventure

Solo to Shared Tables: One Traveler’s Culinary Adventure
My heart raced as I stared at the airport departure board, watching my carefully planned Italian adventure threatening to unravel. The business class ticket to Miami – a rare splurge meant to kick off my Calabrese culinary tour in style – now seemed like a cruel joke as Hurricane warnings flashed across every screen.
For 48 grueling hours, I navigated an endless maze of rebooking’s and alternative routes, my dreams of leisurely exploring Rome before meeting the tour group growing dimmer by the minute.
With the tour company’s strict policy echoing in my mind – “the tour starts with or without you” – each passing hour cranked up my anxiety. I made it – just barely.
As our two guides welcomed me with warm smiles and promises of upcoming feasts, my travel-worn shoulders finally relaxed.
The logistical storm had passed and ahead lay nothing but sun-drenched days where my biggest decision would be choosing which sundress to wear while savoring the flavors of Southern Italy.

A Recipe for Adventure

It began with a cookbook—My Calabria, given to me by a friend. As I leafed through its pages, I was captivated by the photographs of Pasta Calabrese, Eggplant Caponata, and my favorite Calabrian bright red peppers. Author Rosetta Costantino’s stories of family recipes and the Calabrese countryside made me long for firsthand experience.
When I discovered she led culinary tours to her home region of Calabria, I knew I had to go.
Though my friend ultimately couldn’t make the journey due to illness, her words echoed in my mind: “Go. Experience it for yourself.”
Italy, my favorite European country, had beckoned me countless times over the years.
Yet despite my many visits, the southern region of Calabria remained unexplored—a place where traditions still lived in daily life, far from the tourist crowds of Rome.
I dreamed of discovering:
- Family-run trattorias tucked away in ancient streets
- Cooking classes where time-honored secrets and techniques are revealed
- Self-sustaining castle gardens bursting with Mediterranean bounty
- The stories behind centuries-old recipes passed down through generations
- Wines crafted from ancient vines in this untouched corner of Italy

Gathering the Ingredients
Yet turning this dream into reality required careful consideration. As a single traveler joining a culinary tour, I knew I needed to do my homework.
I had several conversations with Rosetta, the cookbook author and tour guide, asking detailed questions about the experience.
Take the time researching your tour through thoughtful questions as the best way to protect both your investment and your dreams.
My pre-trip checklist included:
- Thoroughly researching the itinerary
- Getting a feel for who else would be on this small tour
- Checking reviews from past participants
- Evaluating the single supplement cost, which turned out to be reasonable
Years of travel had taught me some crucial lessons that shaped my planning. Early flight bookings offer the best options and flexibility – waiting often means limited choices and higher prices.
Though it felt indulgent at first, investing in business class proved invaluable during the lengthy journey and unexpected delays. The comfort and flexibility of business class travel became even more appreciated during the hurricane disruption.
Most importantly, I learned to build in buffer days before any organized tour. Those extra days in Rome weren’t just for sightseeing – they became my safety net when weather disrupted my carefully laid plans. Without that cushion of time, I would have missed the tour entirely. These extra days served double duty: insurance against travel mishaps and precious time to absorb the rhythm of Italy before joining the group.
Sometimes circumstances dictate how we travel, and this tour—safe, interesting, and intimate—felt perfect for my first solo adventure.
Sharing the Table

My Italian journey didn’t just change how I traveled—it transformed how I saw myself.
After years of coordinating schedules and compromising on destinations with friends, I discovered a fundamental truth about travel: “Making a successful trip is traveling with like-minded people.”
Pasta was my absolute favorite dish on the trip – Fusilione with wild fennel and ricotta cheese.

On this culinary tour, every participant shared an unwavering passion for food and authentic experiences.
The magic wasn’t just in the destinations we visited, but in our shared appreciation for every moment.
It’s not always easy to find someone you travel well with, as I had learned from past experiences. But here, our common interest in culinary exploration created natural bonds that transcended the usual travel small talk.
Whether we were debating the perfect olive oil pressing method or sharing stories over a long Italian lunch, our connections felt genuine and effortless.

The tour’s thoughtfully crafted itinerary reflected both careful planning and local expertise. Our days typically ran from 8:30 to 4:00, striking an ideal balance between structured activities and personal exploration.
This schedule proved perfect for solo travelers—structured enough to feel secure, yet flexible enough to allow for independent discoveries in the late afternoons and evenings.
I found myself appreciating these pockets of free time to wander through local neighborhoods, swim in the sea, discovering hidden corners of each town that weren’t in any guidebook.
Each destination revealed its own culinary treasures, but the Calabrian peppers stand out in my memory—vibrantly fresh and beautiful, they captured the essence of Southern Italy’s agricultural heritage.
What particularly impressed me was how the schedule accommodated different travel styles. For those who preferred company, there were always fellow travelers ready to explore together.
For those like me who occasionally craved solitude, there was ample time to venture out alone.
Coming from the Colorado Rocky Mountains where daily exercise is part of my routine, I appreciated how this flexibility allowed me to maintain my active lifestyle while exploring.
The freedom to move at my own pace meant I could honor both my need for exercise and my desire for cultural immersion.

The Last Course
Sometimes the most remarkable journeys begin in unexpected ways. Mine started with a cookbook.
While my friend who gifted it couldn’t join due to illness, her enthusiasm for Italy planted the seed for what would become an unforgettable adventure.
Even the journey’s rocky start—weather delays and rerouted flights—couldn’t dampen the anticipation of what lay ahead.
What began as a solitary venture transformed into something richer.
In those first tentative conversations with fellow culinary travelers, we became more than just a tour group; we were companions in discovery, sharing the joy of each new experience, from the first bite of perfectly prepared pasta to the last rays of sun setting over ancient stone buildings.
Take every opportunity to travel—this is perhaps the most valuable lesson of my journey. Don’t wait for perfect timing or familiar companions.
Sometimes the best adventures begin with a simple gift, unfold through unexpected challenges, and lead to connections you never anticipated.
My Calabrian culinary adventure taught me that the real magic of travel lies not just in the destinations we visit, but in the courage to take that first step into the unknown.
